There is One thing in common for ALL successful people. They ALL have set a clear goal to achieve.

The legendary business philosopher Jim Rohn said “The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get.”

How do to set goals in internet marketing?

I have created a goal-setting worksheet with 5 simple rules.
(a PDF version is available for download)

Let’s go over them now.

RULE #1 – Create Balance
You must spread your goals among different business activities and objectives.
1. Number of new visitors
2. Number of new opt-in
3. Number of new customers
4. Sales volume
5. Number of pieces of content you are creating
(a piece of content can be: blog post, article, video, audio interview, podcast, ebook, PDF report)
6. Number of JV partners you are building relationships with
7. Opt-in rate
8. Sales conversion rate
9. Average purchase size of a customer

RULE #2 – Be Constructive
Make your goals you can reach but not you can grasp immediately. Make your goal high enough to excite you, stimulate your desire and enthusiasm. You need those fantastic feelings to turn you on whenever you think about them. But don’t make your goals so high that they seem ludicrous, impossible, and unimaginable that you feel out of touch.

RULE #3 – Be Specific
Determine the followings:
1. Your desired weekly, monthly, yearly income
2. Your desired weekly, monthly and yearly goals for new visitors, new opt-in, and new customers
3. How many words you target to write for each blog post, each article. And how many pieces you are creating weekly, monthly and monthly?
4. How many pages you target to write for each ebook, or each report. And how many pieces are you creating monthly, and yearly?
5. How many minutes you target to create for each video, audio interview, or podcast. And how many pieces are you creating weekly, monthly, and yearly?

RULE #4 – Use Present Tense
The aim here is to let yourself to experience in imagination how you FEEL when you have achieved those goals. If you don’t feel compelling when you achieve your goal in imagination, it is probably you have set your goal too high (or too low sometime) that it is difficult for you to comprehend and FEEL the excitement.

RULE #5 – Be Confidential
Only discuss your goals with people who can intellectually or emotionally support you to achieve this goal. Share your goals with your accountability partners, mentors, mastermind partners, spouse, and friends who cherish those goals with you. Never disclose your goals to someone who resent them and want to pull you down.

Never write “I want to have $2,000 per month” or “I am going to have $2,000 per month”. The phrase ‘want to’ or ‘going to’ implies your goals are always in the future. Subconsciously, you will think there is always a gap between where you are with where your goal is. Instead, write ‘I feel good creating $2,000 income per month.’

When Jim Carrey was still a struggling comedian in 1990, he drove his beat up Toyota to a hill and looked over the city. He had a vision to make a successful career in Hollywood, so he wrote himself a check for $10 million and dated it Thanksgiving 1995. He carried the check in his wallet for years.

Follow that he achieved his success with several blockbuster movies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb & Dumber. That time his asking price for casting a movie is $20 million. When his father died in 1994, he gave that check to his father as a tribute to honor his father who inspired him to achieve his dream.
